Parenting & Sex Education

Goal :

  • To provide parents with knowledge about sexual development from birth to young adulthood
  • To provide parents with guidelines and information about what their children need to know about sexual health
  • To help parents communicate comfortably and effectively with their children about sexual health

Rationale

Comprehensive sex education has not been a part of our education system. It is therefore assumed that parents don’t know the basics about sexual development or healthy sexuality, nor do they know what to say to their children and how to say it. While the main idea is to teach parents how to support healthy sexuality in their children, there is need to include lessons and learning activities on sexual development throughout the lifespan (until young adulthood) of a person as well as lessons on values clarification within the context of sexuality.

Objectives

At the end of this workshop, parents will be able to:

  • Describe sexual development throughout the lifespan of a person
  • Identify key concepts that children need to know about sexual health at each developmental stage from birth to 18 years old
  • Clarify their own values about sexual health
  • Demonstrate appropriate communication skills in talking to their children about sexual health
  • Identify the characteristics of sexually healthy adults
  • Discover appropriate and reliable resources about sexual health
